Ruth & David Watson’s invitingly buzzy restaurant-with-rooms is a place for all seasons: summer drinks on the terrace give way to weekend papers in front of a roaring log fire, & the food keeps pace with a seasonal flexibility. The result could be a lunch of Suffolk-cured ham hock with broad bean & little gem salad & mustard dressing followed by Orford-caught cod with sauteed cauliflower, barberry & saffron ragout or dinner of homegrown pumpkin & sage soup & slow-roast Gloucester Old Spot pork belly with red cabbage, parsnip puree & gravy. Hot Bramley apple crumble with homemade icecream may be straight out of the nursery, but it's balanced by a classy, jewelled sparkling prosecco & blueberry jelly. Add to this a wine list that you can lose yourself in, with some great bargain bin ends to experiment with, & you’ve got what some readers reckon is ‘one of the best places to eat outside London’.
