Square Meal Review of La Chouette ?

Jazz-loving chef, painter & Belgian beer connoisseur Frédéric Desmette is the heart & soul of La Chouette – he’s also captain of the kitchen & frequently doubles as maître d’, too. The name means ‘owl’ in French & original pictures of these wise old birds fill the ultra-traditional dining room. His cooking marries bourgeois themes with a few hearty Belgian touches, & there’s no holding back on the calories when it comes to dishes such as pavé of rump steak with béarnaise, veal kidney with sweet mustard sauce, or fillet of salmon in a sauce laced with ‘bierre blanche’. The fixed-price weekday lunch (prix d’ami) promises three courses in less than an hour for a mere £16.50. Drink one of the recommended Belgian brews or dip into M Desmette’s resolutely French wine list.

    Perhaps the best restaurant in the country, I reckon. Frederic is a fabulous chef I've sadly not visited often, but each dish has been stupendous, and different from anything I have eaten elsewhere. He's a talented and dedicated bird photographer and the remarkable photos on the walls are absurd value. It is easy to persuade my wife we should hurry back as soon as possible but sadly I failed to persuade her to buy a picture.
    I haven't given a high mark for atmosphere because we had the restaurant to ourselves. Amazing to have such a talented chef all to yourself! But when the restaurant is busy it hums, and when quiet it is a lovely peaceful place, and Frederic is a delightful host.
    I don't know how else to say thankyou except to post a review. But I am very grateful.
