Square Meal Review of The French by Simon Rogan at The Midland hotel ?

Manchester’s Midland hotel is where Rolls met Royce, and Simon Rogan’s takeover of its flagship restaurant, The French, makes for another excellent match. Famous for its glorious belle époque decor, the grand dining room has now sprouted some green tones (as befits Rogan’s fondness for all things hedgerow), while Manchester bling is provided by two spherical chandeliers. Fans of Rogan’s Cumbrian flagship L’Enclume will feel right at home here, as henchman Adam Reid delivers “intensely pleasurable” multi-course tasting menus in his master’s image, with all the signature flavours in place: smoked cod with pickled mushrooms, marrow and garlic; ox in coal oil with pumpkin seeds, kohlrabi and sunflower; Yorkshire rhubarb with crab apple, Douglas fir, oats and yoghurt. The verdict? “A perfect balance between deliciousness and innovation”, backed by terrific, well-informed staff. Note: Rogan has also re-vamped the hotel’s old Colony restaurant as Mr Cooper's House and Garden.

    Champagne and Chutney :: The French

    Birthdays are always special aren’t they? Mine was last week and I wanted to do something special to celebrate. Nobody (and I mean nobody) does ‘special’ better than The French in Manchester so I was over the moon when I found out I was going to the French for my birthday dinner. If you haven’t heard of The French, it’s the famous restaurant at the Midland Hotel which is as old as Manchester itself! The Midland Hotel is where Rolls met Royce to form the Rolls-Royce company way back in 1904 after all. The French has its own claim to fame too, it was one of Britain’s first Michelin-starred restaurants awarded back in the 1974, with the publication of the first guide. Even the Beatles were famously refused a table at The French for being ‘inappropriately dressed’...

    Nomface :: The French, Manchester

    After all the hype and glowing reviews coupled with a long ambition to visit L’enclume, The French provided the perfect opportunity to sample the food of acclaimed chef Simon Rogan. A slight different approach in this post where both of our comments are included in different colours, purple for Mrs Nom, and blue for mine. The experience started with us being walked from the entrance of the hotel to restaurant by the pleasant concierge chap...
