Housed in the Ikon Gallery – Birmingham’s contemporary art space in the beautifully converted Oozells Street School – Café Ikon pleases the crowds with its modern take on tapas. Classics such as patatas bravas, cheese & spinach croquetas, albondigas (meatballs) & calamares à la plancha share the limelight with more up-to-date dishes including scallops with cucumber & mint salsa. Lunchtime specials (three tapas for £7.95) are proving popular – as are the café’s famous paellas – & there is a range of vegetarian options. The revitalised wine list brings together a bunch of eminently drinkable Spanish tipples as well as some fine sherries. Doors open out to fair-weather tables overlooking Oozells Square.
