Square Meal Review of Sharrow Bay ?

With Ullswater lapping below the windows & Helvellyn glowering on the horizon, this is a perfect setting & for many visitors, Sharrow Bay is the epitome of the English country house hotel – it was certainly the first of the genre. Noted for its opulent, over-the-top decor, Edwardian-style afternoon teas & rich food, Sharrow Bay is known for serving bold multi-course lunches & dinners – it’s best to go with a healthy appetite. Suissesse soufflé of stilton, spinach & onion & an intercourse sorbet may have an old-fashioned ring, but fillet of lamb with sweetbreads, dauphinoise potatoes and tomato and rosemary sauce, & fillet of turbot with shrimp risotto, ravioli of lobster and crayfish sauce show an awareness of contemporary trends. For those with stamina, there’s Francis Coulson’s sticky toffee sponge for afters, although the dark chocolate and cherry soufflé with vanilla sauce is worth the ten minute wait.

This was possibly [no, actually almost definitely] the worst meal I have eaten in my life. The ‘smoked haddock’ starter was mixed haddock and salmon – NOT a happy combination.
The wine was vile. I have never before or since complained about wine. Unfortunately my companion's taste buds were blown to pieces by chemo but, when I mentioned that the wine tasted odd, the waiter returned to say that there was nothing wrong with it. Not a visit to our table by the wine waiter, not an offer of a replacement bottle, nada. Total humiliation.
I can't even remember what the main course was — it was that good!!
The iced dessert was so well frozen that it completely failed to thaw to an edible consistency, despite my ‘politic’ retirement to the ladies. Still frozen to a rock-like consistency after a more-than-usually lengthy pit-stop.
Poor Tom paid out over the odds for this fiasco and I couldn't ruin his gesture by complaining at the time. I am definitely not the complaining type but this food, the service, the so-called experience was a non-event, sadly.
