Michael Caines is a bit of a superstar, best known for his cooking at Gidleigh Park in Devon but now in the process of turning himself into a brand. In partnership with millionaire hotelier, Andrew Brownsword, Caines is involved in the small chain of ABode hotels - the Glasgow example officially launched at the end of 2005. Its restaurant is a modern looking establishment on the ground floor, branded 'MC', but under the charge of Martin Donnelly, who has spells with both Caines & Gordon Ramsay on his CV. No Caines in the kitchen then, but you won't care – Donnelly is very good indeed. To start, you might try pumpkin & wild mushroom risotto with mascarpone & pumpkin oil; move on to nicely roast sea bass on cod brandade with salsify, courgettes, & red wine sauce; then finish with a signature dessert of cranachan souffle & raspberry sorbet. Great cooking, decent wines, & Scotland's most important restaurant launch since old "F Word" himself ventured here with Amaryllis in 2001.
