The Fourth Floor Cafe & Bar
A department store cafe? That’s one way of looking at this distinctly metropolitan import with its open-plan kitchen and chic bar. But Harvey Nick’s Fourth Floor is also among Leeds’ most serious restaurants. The kitchen puts the emphasis on local and seasonal produce, delivering starters along the lines of pumpkin and walnut ravioli teamed with cavolo nero, butternut squash cream, truffle and walnut butter. Depending on the calendar, mains might feature game from the Yorkshire moors (loin of venison with braised compressed roots and venison sausage, for example) or fish from the East Coast ports (roast cod with steamed clams, baby leeks, sautéed wild mushrooms and a light curry broth). To conclude, perhaps try stem ginger rice pudding with baked plums. Sunday lunch and afternoon tea are also worth a punt – likewise the classy wine list.
