Established in 1995, long-running seafood bistro Creelers is camped just yards from the Royal Mile, in the heart of Edinburgh’s tourist country. Inside, there are two adjoining rooms with simple decor, while the seafood that finds its way onto your plate is top-drawer stuff; there is a sister restaurant on the Isle of Arran with an associated smokehouse, while one of the co-founders of the business was formerly a fisherman. It’s worth keeping an eye out for the specials here, although the two-course lunch (£10.50) offers simple pleasures in the shape of, say, steamed mussels followed by cod fillet with new potatoes & asparagus. Early-evening menus are equally good value, & the carte could bring Kintyre oysters to start, poached Isle of Gigha halibut on chanterelles with tarragon & vermouth cream as a main, & chocolate cheesecake with espresso syrup for dessert.
