Square Meal Review of The Barbican Kitchen ?

Having made a name for themselves on TV and as the double act behind the self-named Tanners Restaurant, chefs Chris and James Tanner branched out with a more informal, allcomers’ eatery in the Plymouth Gin Distillery – a showpiece building dating back to the 15th century and famous as the place where the Pilgrim Fathers convened before setting sail for the New World. By contrast, the restaurant itself is dressed in funky contemporary colours with leather seating, trendy artwork and exposed ventilation pipes. The menu cruises through ‘little dishes’, burgers, dogs, pasta, grills and various items from the stove – so take your pick from, say, chicken and chorizo Caesar salad, wild garlic risotto with mascarpone and wild mushrooms, ‘butchers pork plates’ or seared calf’s liver with horseradish mash. After that, have a ‘final fling’ with rhubarb and custard pannacotta.
