Name after the 18th-century vintner Thomas Peacock who lived nearby, Ye Olde Famous Peacock Inn (to give the place its full title) sits in the quaint fishing enclave of Newhaven between Leith and Ganton. It’s been through a lot of changes over the years, but is still renowned for serving some of the best fish and chips in town – early-evening fish suppers by the fire are something of an institution hereabouts. Fans of seafood can also their fill of smoked haddock fishcakes, bowls of mussels, seafood linguine or pan-fried cod with pea and broad bean risotto. Otherwise, the menu offers everything from haggis balls with whisky sauce to penne carbonara and macaroni cheese via steak and ale pie. There’s also a small bar if you want to wet your whistle, and plenty of seating outside.
