Square Meal Review of The Laurel Inn ?

One of the tiniest boozers in North Yorkshire, with an emblematic laurel tree seemingly sprouting from its frontage, this legendary watering hole is also famed for its dramatic seascapes – the clifftop village was originally a fishing port and later an infamous haunt of smugglers, who used a maze of tunnels to bring their bounty ashore. Inside it’s traditional to a T, with old photographs on the walls, open fires, cosy nooks and a minuscule bar carved out of rock. Despite the decorative displays of lager bottles, patriotic real ale is the booze of choice, with pumps dispensing draughts from Theakston’s alongside incomers such as Adnams. The pub has a dedicated family room – although food is limited to some basic pub grub – and the owners also have a delightful little apartment for those who want to stay over.
