Square Meal Review of Bellota Bar y Tapas ?

Spanish restaurant group La Tasca has converted its Brighton branch into a new 'independent' tapas and cava bar in an attempt to rejuvenate the brand. At first glance, the garish pink and yellow colour scheme still screams 'chain', but the menu now has a more authentic feel than its branded forebears. Slow-cooked pork cheeks in Pedro Ximénez sauce and roasted chicken with smoked paprika and honey vie for attention on the tapas list, but it's the wooden planks of cheese and charcuterie that really stand out: air-dried tuna (mojama) and hand-carved Bellota Ibérico ham are a cut above what you would expect from a generic outfit. They make a good base for bubbles at the bottle-lined cava bar, which is stocked exclusively with wines from Catalonia's largest producer Codorníu. Further sites are planned for Edinburgh and London.
