Square Meal Review of Indian Essence ?

Michelin-starred celeb chef Atul Kochhar (of Benares fame) has teamed up with restaurateur Jitindar Singh to launch Indian Essence – a flashy new eatery serving high-end cuisine in the heart of Kent. Despite an inauspicious roadside setting, the dining room shows its cosmopolitan style with lilac and mauve tones, latticework, flamboyant contemporary artwork and elegantly laid tables. The menu makes few compromises to the suburban location, offering signature plates of pan-roasted John Dory with green spices and oven-roasted tomatoes alongside the likes of home-smoked duck with pears and chickpeas, tandoori rabbit with cherry chutney and braised goat with peppers. Cumin-scented potato cakes, chicken tikka and an upmarket take on rogan josh strike a more familiar note, while desserts such as rose- and raspberry-scented Calcutta-style cheesecake show Kochhar’s trademark mix of Asian and European influences.

  1. Michelin starred chef Atul Kochhar has already made a huge success of the Mayfair based Benares, which takes Indian cuisine to a fine dining audience with a good deal of style, enough tradition to sate spice devotees and innovation to delight some of the gastronomic intelligentsia. Fusion is most definitely the theme and I wondered if this extended to his lesser known Petts Wood Indian Essence restaurant, which seems to play greater homage to more traditional dishes than it’s centrally located sister. You wouldn’t necessarily know about it unless you’d scoured the web but it’s worth highlighting for numerous reasons. Kochhar was the first Indian restaurateur to gain a Michelin star, the restaurant is slick and pretty easy to get to from Victoria, the food is fabulous and it successfully showcases good Indian cuisine. You won’t find spicing for bragging rights here, it’s a more upmarket Indian dining experience...

  2. Myself and my food fanatic Brother-in-law David were VERY excited at the prospect of attending Indian Essence, Atul Kochhar’s latest venture in Petts Wood, Kent. Kent you may say? Well the location is actually one of the many things so cool about this place, it sees his progressive Indian cuisine adapted to a neighborhood setting. If you didn’t know, TV chef personality Atul is a bit of a Michelin-starred legend from Saturday Kitchen, a mean Indian cook. We were attending his book launch ‘Curries of the world’ where we would be cooked for by Atul, from a dribble-inducing 6-course tasting menu paired with wines and cocktails. Element...
