Rather surprisingly located in the basement of the Studley Hotel, this long-serving pan-Asian restaurant is suitably decked out with lots of lacquered wood, Japanese lattice screens and artfully laid tables. Head chef Kenneth Poon plied his trade at London’s Dorchester hotel before de-camping to Harrogate, and he has created a menu that reaches out to all parts of the Orient. Thailand brings fishcakes, curries, stir-fries and pad thai noodles, Malaysia offers satays, China contributes won ton soup, kung po chicken and steamed sea bass with soy and spring onion, and there’s nasi goreng from Indonesia – not forgetting a special sushi and sashimi menu every Tuesday night. To drink, look for Asian beers or spice-friendly Rieslings. The Orchid has been doing business in Harrogate since 2003, and consistency is its watchword.
