While The Oak Bistro “still bears the scars” of its former life as a doomed wine bar, it is shaping up well as a great little neighbourhood eatery. Occupying a Grade II-listed building, the interior divides into two dining rooms: one with comfortable banquette seating, dark wood and exposed brickwork; the other a more elegant affair festooned with paintings by Cambridge artist Nicholas Juett. Rich, buttery bistro food wins the day here – from wonderfully earthy artichoke soup with truffle oil or crispy pork belly with mustard and apple compote to salmon en croûte or rump of lamb with butterbean casserole. To finish, a gooey chocolate fondant is reckoned to be “worth the wait”. If the weather’s kind, take advantage of the romantic courtyard and walled garden – perfect for summer days and nights. Genuinely enthusiastic service seals the deal.
