A stunningly different restaurant close to the centre of Bath, The River Canteen is located, of course, on the very banks of the River Avon. A super-contemporary design slotted in amongst the mellow stone terraces so synonymous with Austen’s favourite town, The River Canteen stands out yet feels very much a part of its surroundings thanks to its slate roof and raised position, reminiscent perhaps of old boat houses. Inside this lovely glass-fronted building, guests find a comfortably modern, upmarket interior, the furnishings and décor nodding to contemporary Italian style. This nod connects The River Canteen’s setting and its food, a lush collection of Italian favourites, made using quality ingredients and combining the traditions of regional Italian flavour and a new, gourmet approach to cookery. With a great wine list featuring numerous favourites at reasonable prices, The River Canteen is one of Bath’s true all-rounders.
