Opened in October 2012 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, this refectory-style café occupies what was Westminster Abbey’s medieval cellarium. Originally used by Benedictine monks as a food and drink store, it has found a new lease of life as part of the Benugo group (noted for their eateries in public places). Food is available throughout the day, from breakfasts, sandwiches, cakes and afternoon tea to big helpings of beef and ale stew, substantial salads from the ‘pantry table’ (grilled chicken breast with blue cheese and candied walnuts, say) and nostalgic puds such as apple and blackberry crumble with custard. To drink, there are English beers as well as plentiful wines by the glass or carafe. One floor above is an open-air terrace fashioned from the old misericord where the monks used to eat and relax.
