To call it a café seriously understates the gorgeous, pure white minimalism of de’Clare’s – York’s instantly cool lunchtime/early-evening retreat. Tucked away down a city-centre side street, this venue is a satellite of Clare Prowse’s lovely deli on nearby Lendal. While the latter is mostly takeaway, the Peter Lane outlet plates up simple but classy dishes from dry-cured bacon on organic Shipton Mill white bread or scrambled egg, chorizo and potato ‘revuelta’ for breakfast, through to tapas of pisto manchego or meatballs in tomato sauce. In between, there are original salads, cheese, meat and veggie platters, plus terrific dishes such as Spanish chicken with new potatoes and chorizo. You can also buy wonderful sweet treats – gluten-free lemon polenta cake, heaps of meringues served with mascarpone, or maybe passion-fruit curd with crème fraîche. It’s a significant cut above York’s café norm.
