You have to know about the Venner Bar to find it. Hidden away at the end of the Georgian ballroom in the Bull Hotel, this small and intimate space is decadently furnished with battered chesterfields, gilt chairs and crystal chandeliers – the whole shebang creating a lock-in vibe that can make entire evenings vanish in a haze. Cocktails, Prosecco and the popular Furleigh Estate sparkling wine are the draw here, while canapés at the Venner on Friday evenings has become something of a local institution. No wonder some of the hotel’s guests look slightly bemused by it all. As for the name, it refers to a certain Colonel Samuel Venner, who took a bullet at the Bull during the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685.
