A rambling, traditional country inn with a wealth of exposed wood and brickwork, the Apple Tree has bags of character and a menu worthy of a detour. It’s the work of chef Lee Evans and his wife Ally, a pastry chef who takes charge of baking as well as front of house. The cooking pulls together an impressive list of local ingredients from deep-fried Somerset brie with Cumberland sauce to West Country fish pie with buttered greens. Much of the menu is built around traditional pub dishes (steaks, burgers with beetroot coleslaw and chips, etc), but you’ll also find the likes of oriental crispy beef with sesame and shiitake mushroom salad or summer vegetable and parmesan risotto with confit tomatoes. To follow, maybe cinnamon churros with salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.
