Although just two miles from the A20, this beautiful example of a Wealden hall house is found in well-trodden North Downs walking country, and confidently juggles the skills required to be both a foodie haunt and a place for just a pint of two. There’s a determinedly old-fashioned, pubby feel to the bustling bar, and the Plough’s reputation depends on its dedication to Kent’s brewing heroes – among them Canterbury Ales and Hopdaemon. The interior proudly display beams and standing timbers – signs of a history going back more than 600 years – while the kitchen backs it all up with uncluttered food from a menu that shows a commitment to local sourcing: Seasalter lamb and Alkham Valley rose veal are more than enough to bring a big smile to your face.
