Square Meal Review of Ardanaiseig Hotel ?

Built in the grand baronial manner for Colonel Archibald Campbell, this stately Victorian mansion is set in glorious rambling gardens at the dead end of a winding road by the banks of Loch Awe. It's a fine house that has been transformed into a highly romantic retreat, complete with all manner of distractions from painting classes to chamber-music recitals. Dinner in the full-dress candlelit restaurant is a typical country-house show that runs to five courses, kicking off with soup (perhaps Jerusalem artichoke and almond velouté with shaved Parmesan and truffle) ahead of a fish course of, say, pan-roasted halibut with spinach, carrot purée, wild mushrooms and Muscat sauce. The centrepiece could be anything from Aberdeen Angus beef Wellington to mallard with salsify and foie-gras sauce, with tricksy cold desserts and Scottish cheese to round things off.
