The denizens of Hove don't need to take the ferry from Newhaven to sample the French mode de vie, thanks to this lovely little bistro on their doorstep. Run by husband & wife Jean-Christophe & Julia Martin, L'Eglise is modelled on all those amicable neighbourhood brasseries that are the backbone of Gallic social life. The owners are usually on hand to meet, greet & show guests to closely packed tables illuminated by retro globe-shaped lights, & there’s also a warm glow of nostalgia to the menu, with classics such as confit de canard, moules-frites & escargots preceding old-school crème brûlée or parfait citron. The wine list is unashamedly patriotic & there's a nifty selection of digestifs, eau de vie & brandies to satisfy hardcore Francophiles. Prices are reasonable, especially the 'prix fixe’ lunch (£9.95/13.95 for two/three courses).
