Despite the name, grain rather than grape is the main attraction at this pub-with-rooms (part of the Hotel du Vin empire). Pints of local ales such as Sussex Best, Hophead & Smoky Nol are served in quaint pewter tankards, although modernists can always ask for a glass. Dominated by a long bar, also clad in twisted pewter, PDV aims to recreate an old-fashioned tavern with exposed brickwork & stained glass windows. It's all a little contrived, although it's hard to criticise the comforting pub grub: start with crispy duck faggots or a salad of black pudding & poached egg before filling up with lamb shank & mash or scampi, chips & peas. Previously the Sussex Arts Club, the building has a lovely domed private room at the back, which hosts the Sussex Beer Festival in April.
