The Wig & Pen has been given a real shot in the arm by the team behind Sheffield’s big-hitting Milestone, & it’s now doing great things. Part bar, part restaurant, it buzzes as a sociable hangout & is a fantastic advert for proudly seasonal British cooking. The kitchen makes the most of carefully sourced ingredients for a raft of dishes with plenty of panache, witness beetroot salad with pickled beetroot dressing & a goats’ cheese mousseline, or poached & grilled chicken breast with bacon gnocchi, baby artichokes, a bread-sauce fritter & confit shallot jus. For afters, coconut rice pudding served with passion fruit jelly, compressed fruit salad & lemongrass granita reveals a fondness for funky combinations. Warm, welcoming staff add to the feel-good factor.
