Set on the edge of picture-perfect Paxford, this 17th-century inn has seen a recent change of ownership & chef, but thankfully not a drop in standards. Inside, a tidy, flagstoned bar decorated in vintage ‘country style’ dispenses locally brewed ales & guest beers, alongside a blackboard of snacks such as sardines on toast. Beyond, several comfortable dining areas tricked out in polished oak with cushioned pews overlook a pretty pub garden with direct access to the village playground next door. The kitchen sources much of its produce from the neighbourhood & beyond to create uncomplicated, but full-flavoured dishes such as rump of lamb with lentils & lamb jus or Cornish sea bream with sun-blush tomatoes & pesto.
