Coburg Street is another of those Leith thoroughfares that was disreputable in its time but has long been sanitised by residential developments. In 2009, Ana & Mickael Mesle descended on the scene with their friendly café/bistro, offering bright, simple surrounds & food that is several notches above your run-of-the-mill caff. Expect perfectly poached free-range eggs on toast for breakfast, smoked haddock & salmon fishcakes or chicken liver & Cognac parfait for lunch, decent cakes & perpetual coffee. It also has a separate menu for the nippers including the likes of beans on toast or homemade fish fingers. With art on the walls, & Ana taking your order with the phrase, ‘What can I get you sweetie?’ it’s one of Leith’s recent success stories. It’s also handy for the Water of Leith riverside walkway – there’s an access point just over the street.
