Joseph Pearce has been a bar for over a century, but it was as recently as 2007 that Swedish couple Anna & Mike Christopherson took it over and added a welcome measure of Scandinavian sensibility. With a lick of paint, some sofas, plants, artworks, a decent menu and other bohemian touches, it was transformed beyond recognition. You will find typical crowds of drinkers here in the evening hoovering up pints of Sagres or glasses of house red, but equally a children’s play area brings in parents with babies or toddlers for brunch or lunch. If sitting outside at the pavement tables, there are complimentary blankets to ward off the Scottish chill while other attractions include Scrabble nights, regular live music, DJs and art exhibitions. Joseph Pearce is inclusive, funky and rewrites the rule book on what an Edinburgh bar can be. It also has three sister establishments in Leith: Boda, Victoria and Sofi’s.
