Square Meal Review of The Pig ?

From the ivy-meshed Georgian house ringed by New Forest oak to the library leather, racks of wellies and rooms furnished like an antique country pile, everything about the laid-back Pig feels “fashionably mismatched” and just right. At its heart is a suitably horticultural, “potting shed” dining room, while the enthusiastic kitchen is fed by seasonal bounty from a productive walled garden, polytunnels, a smokehouse and the local countryside (courtesy of a resident forager): ‘piggy bits’ of black pudding balls with piccalilli deliver on high porcine expectations, likewise “velvety” pork with crab-apple mash and spikes of crunchy bacon. Otherwise, veggie fritters are served with wild garlic mayo, New Forest mushrooms pop up everywhere, and fish might include Dorset pollack with Hampshire chorizo, pearl barley and cockles. The wine list is “massive and unusual”, while cocktails include “amazing” concoctions served in Kilner jars.

  1. London is great, love it – I wouldn’t live here otherwise, but every now and then it’s good to clear the lungs and head out to the countryside. And this little piggy recently went on a stonker of a day trip to Brockenhurst to check out The Pig, which is located right in the heart of The New Forest National Park. After an easy hour-and-a-half train commute, with a few other bloggers, followed by a 5 min cab drive, we reached our gorgeously impressive destination. As soon as you step inside the revamped 17th Century building, a lovely homely feel immediately warms you. The style is rustic, shabby chic with mismatched furniture, which is done well with real attention to detail – the environment is relaxed and welcoming and actually rather special...

  2. The Pig's website has a whole page devoted to the coverage it has received from publications like the Times, GQ and Vogue. This Hampshire hotel and restaurant is clearly becoming a very popular and fashionable spot (with prices to match) and certainly doesn't need me to alert more people to its existence. But the meal I had there was so impressive that I feel bound to commemorate it. The New Forest has its fair share of country house or would-be country house hotels. However, although The Pig broadly fits this description, the owners are clearly aiming for a low-key, shabby chic atmosphere. In the restaurant the cutlery and chairs are carefully mismatched, and the sloping glass roof and potted herbs make it feel like an elegant greenhouse (the hard surfaces and high concentration of tables mean it gets noisy at busy times; side plates would also be handy)...
