Underneath the much-loved Affleck’s Palace, the Dog is a glamorous take on a New York speakeasy. It’s a good fit – the Northern Quarter has doubled for lower Manhattan on the big screen, & the bar’s steel columns, wooden beams & bare brick are an oft-repeated theme in the converted warehouses of this part of town. The huge space, a former club, includes a long bar & ‘secret’ room accessed using a pin number distributed to a select few. Drinks include wine carafes at £5 as well as cocktails like the weekend rockstar, made with Jack Daniels, Jägermeister, caramel & cherry bitters, with beers including Vedett & Erdinger. The ‘balls’ are those used on the four pool tables, & late opening (until four or five in the morning), with food served until 1am, attracts a refreshingly mixed crowd.
