Housed in the cellars of an old Victorian brewery and workhouse, The Vaults is a funky addition to Birmingham’s re-energised Jewellery Quarter. Exposed brick arches, autumnal colours and walls hung with artwork set the tone for a mix of uptown brasserie and debonair, clubby lounge. The kitchen has ditched its restaurant-style food in favour of international ‘tapas’ plates that are more in keeping with the noisy vibe in the bar: cue the likes of shrimp spring rolls, saffron and mussel risotto, mini ‘chip shop’ cod and mushy peas or mushroom and herb ragoût with deep-fried egg, followed by crème brûlée and lemon mousse. On Fridays, a ‘bleu night special’ attracts party-loving Brummies with its brand of ‘old skool and new cool’. Also look out for cocktail masterclasses and wine tastings.
