Right at the top of Manchester’s iconic Urbis building, The Modern is a sleek contemporary venue that pitches good looks with commanding views over the city. The kitchen also puts down its marker, offering the likes of roasted scallops with crispy pork belly & watercress sauce or a warm salad of Mobberley pigeon with Puy lentils & orange ahead of Goosnargh duck breast with braised faggot, red cabbage, creamed potatoes & fruit tea sauce, homity pie with cauliflower purée, or roast rack & shoulder of High Peak lamb with celeriac & potato crisp. Dark chocolate & malt whisky tart with hazelnut & caramel ice cream rounds things off nicely. It’s reliable stuff, delivered by relaxed & friendly staff.
