Hidden away among a maze of winding lanes in the Sussex Downs close to Goodwood, this once down-at-heel pub has been gently remodelled. A big blackboard menu, coffee machine & wine list announce its gastro intentions, yet welcome touches such as newspapers to read & local ales on handpump bring the place back to its roots. Fish features strongly on the food front: classy seafood platters are a favourite with those who fancy splashing out after a win on the horses, although the line-up could also include fresh Selsey lobster (perhaps given the thermidor treatment) & everyday classics such as moules-frites. Meanwhile, rack of lamb served with parsnip mash & a rosemary & port sauce should please the carnivorous brigade. Exposed flint-&-brick walls, stripped beams, a log burner & hop garlands provide the necessary cosiness, while a smart garden out back lures the fair-weather crowd.
