Square Meal Review of Freemasons ?

Tucked away up a secret snicket in picture-pretty Wiswell, this rustic inn has received a serious facelift. A smart exterior paint-job gives way to flagged floors, beams & open fires, plus gleaming mismatched antique furniture & prints of country scenes. There are no joltingly contemporary additions, but young, informed service & an up-to-date menu belie the traditional surroundings. Local lad Steven Smith is renowned for his creative use of seasonal produce & he shows off his considerable skills with dishes such as crab & skate tian with avocado ice cream, brown butter & passion fruit, crispy lamb belly or local Goosnargh duck, poached & roasted with creamed sprouts, beetroot, orange & won tons. Butter-poached cod with mushy peas, salsify fritters & warm tartare sauce is a comfort food classic, & you can finish in retro style with sherry trifle, baked quince & warm madeleines.
