The latest offering from Pierre Levicky (founder of the Pierre Victoire chain & its offshoots), Chez Jules is cheap, cheerful & popular, with dripping candles & strategic red-&-white check tablecloths giving the place a trademark Gallic feel. The menu is in keeping, so you might start with French onion soup or tartiflette, move on to steak-frites or crab thermidor, & finish with apricot tart or a crêpe. There are also some mains designed for sharing: coq au vin, for example. The place is loud & lively when full, & it’s possible to spend as little as £15-20 per person on three courses (or even less), but don’t expect tip-top ingredients. The tiny wine list stays below £18 a bottle (£6.50 for a 50cl house carafe).
