Perched above a shop selling outdoor gear on Aviemore’s main street, the Mountain Café was opened by New Zealander Kirsten Gilmour in 2004. Its simple decor & good cooking soon became a big hit with the tourists & walkers who head for this small Highland town to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Wake-up sustenance comes in the shape of breakfasts ranging from hot-smoked salmon & scrambled eggs on a toasted muffin to full fry-ups (including a veggie version). Lunch brings terrific smoked seafood chowder, homemade burgers, generous salads, fishcakes or apricot, pecan & chicken mayo sandwiches (a nod to Gilmour’s Pacific Rim roots). The café also stocks really inventive cakes – perfect for some between-meals self-indulgence. Definitely worth the trip upstairs.
