Square Meal Review of The Old Vine ?

An attractive, understated Georgian pub set on a tiny cobbled square overlooking the cathedral green. It’s an enviable position on a sought-after street & offers a characterful modern take on the traditional hostelry-with-lodgings theme. The bar & restaurant blend period charm (oak beams, timbers & floorboards) with modern country styling, while the cooking suits both passing tourists & regulars. Local produce & eclectic influences sit happily on the menu, which might take in pub classics such as Hampshire pork sausages, creamy mash & rich onion gravy as well as confit duck with dauphinois potatoes & green beans or roasted salmon fillet with miso marinade & a sesame crust, wasabi mash, soya beans & bonito jus. To conclude, desserts stay in familiar, comforting territory for the likes of butterscotch & treacle sponge pudding. The small, part-covered terrace is popular in the summer.

We stopped off at Winchester en route to Southampton for lunch. We picked Old Vine due to a promising internet search. We have a 10 month old. To our dismay we were told by staff that the restaurant did not serve under 6 year olds (this includes those that bring their own baby food). Do not go there if you have children – save yourself the journey!

Bit difficult to rate this restaurant on food and drink, atmosphere and value for money as they would not serve us. Therefore can only rate as awful
