Given its name & landlocked location, you probably wouldn’t guess that this traditional-looking pub had a passion for seafood. However, the lengthy menu (& especially the daily blackboard roster) could reveal the likes of moules marinière, seared scallops with minted pea purée & crispy pancetta, & mains such as shellfish platters. The kitchen also pleases meaty appetites with hearty offerings such as beef & ale pie, & Gloucester Old Spot pork loin teamed with a celeriac rösti & caramelised Braeburn apple & calvados jus. Though opened up, the interior is conventional & cosy with low dark beams & timbers plus warming winter fires. Despite its gastro aspirations, The Dog & Pheasant hasn’t forgotten its pub roots, with a small bar dispensing real ales alongside well-chosen wines, while a front terrace & rear garden complete the picture.
