Black Bo’s is a small, bohemian pub with an eponymous vegetarian restaurant attached, & has been part of the local scene for more than 20 years. Pitched on a side street off the Royal Mile, it looks bistro-scruffy but friendly; with the candles lit, you might even call it romantic. Long known for incorporating fruit into its dishes, the kitchen might deliver tomato, feta & kiwi salad, ahead of spicy mushroom & almond balls stuffed with garlic cream cheese, plus pineapple chutney & minted yoghurt on the side. Main dishes are served with mash of the day, salad (green or mixed) or vegetables (roast, steamed or stir-fried). Desserts such as fruit tart or ice cream are quite straightforward by comparison. It’s all very laid-back & homespun – a pleasant alternative for the city’s veggies, although carnivores might wonder what the fuss is all about.
