Set on the first floor of the Golf & Country Club, with windows on every side, Monks Brasserie makes the most of its views over the Loughor Estuary – smudgily beautiful in blues & greens by day, but best at sunset when the whole sky turns orange. With vistas like these, the food could easily become an afterthought, but luckily the kitchen has avoided any dumbing down. In line with the smartly rustic setting (wood floors, big fire, sophisticated sofas), the food is hearty & simple: typical offerings might include beer-battered cod with minted mushy peas, a ‘gourmet’ burger with hand-cut chips, & slow-cooked belly pork with sage & shallot butter. Puddings such as honey-glazed apple pie or sherry trifle follow on rather nicely. A terrace encircles the whole building, making this a nifty choice for alfresco meals.
