For many years, this site was The Claremont – a much-loved, gay-friendly pub on a residential street between Edinburgh city centre & Leith. In 2009, the place was taken over, freshened up & renamed Elbow. The result is a trendy café-bar with a cool, casual look, a mezzanine level & decent tunes on the sound system. Food is served right through from breakfast to dinner, & everything is rustled up in a pint-sized kitchen. Evening starters might include goats’ cheese & tomato tart, crayfish cocktail, or prawn & chorizo salad, while mains range from staples (burger & fries, fish & chips) to slightly more ambitious stuff (sea bream, sirloin steak, vegetarian gnocchi). For afters, perhaps lemon tart or milk & cookies. The functional wine list opens with by-the-glass selections from £3.25.
