Camellia Restaurant
Built in 1833 as a family home for a noted Victorian botanist (which accounts for the hundreds of camellias & rhododendrons in the surrounding 93 acres of parkland), South Lodge is an imposing pile. The aptly named Camellia Restaurant combines breathtaking views over the South Downs with a repertoire of modern British cooking that has a strong commitment to local supplies. Breast of wood pigeon with spring onion & radish salad ahead of pot-roast breast of chicken with dauphinoise, roast baby onions & cep cream, then tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream could make up a good-value lunch (£15/20 for two/three courses), while smoked breast of duck with beetroot tartare & lime gribiche or lobster thermidor with parmesan & saffron vegetables up the ante at dinner. Drinkers should applaud the fact that everything on the comprehensive wine list is available by the glass.
