The Richmond Arms

More restaurant than gastropub, the buzzy revamped Richmond Arms is set within the entrance arch of the Goodwood Estate’s original 17th-century coaching inn. The dining room now has a light & airy feel, which suits the modern British brasserie food on offer. Classic starters of marinated crayfish tails, fennel & slow-roasted tomatoes or Sussex crab tart with caramelised onions & old Sussex Cheddar could give way to mains embracing gastropub fare (four-hour braised shoulder of lamb & seared kidneys ‘hotpot’) as well as full-on restaurant specialities – Denham Estate venison with Anna potatoes, caramelised chard & liquorice jus, say. For dessert, order the rum baba with pistachio ice-cream if it’s on.
