Ben McKellar has extended his restaurant empire beyond Brighton with this relaxed country pub. The ‘Ginger’ philosophy of local & seasonal ingredients is a natural fit for the rural setting, & this old thatched boozer with a big garden & open fires provides the perfect backdrop. The menu is traditional enough to keep the country set happy & sufficiently innovative to tempt townies out of Brighton: beetroot & goats’ cheese ravioli, followed perhaps by roast monkfish tail with harissa potatoes, prawn beignet & fish soup sauce or free-range local chicken & portobello mushroom pie with pancetta-fried green beans are typical of the style. Be sure to save room for the old-school puds. Afterwards, if you’re up to it, the friendly staff know some invigorating post-prandial walks.
