With its low-beamed ceilings, wood-burning stove & terrace overlooking the village green, Moonrakers certainly doesn’t seem out of place among the quaint tearooms of Alfriston. But don’t be deceived by its old-world charm, because dishes such as scallops teamed with glazed pork belly, carrot purée & ras el hanout crackling or tea- & orange-infused venison with savoy cabbage & artichoke purée show the food served here is as modern as can be. The curious name refers to the fact that smugglers used to hide their contraband in a local pond & rake it up by moonlight.
