A welcome oasis on the north bank of the Humber, Lyndsey & Richard Johns’ restaurant in a Georgian house by the Bridge is a fine neighbourhood destination that punches impressively above its local weight. It’s smart & homely – rather like eating in someone’s front room – but Richard’s food comes with real flavour & polish. With just 18 covers & a modest menu of just two starters & two mains, it makes a virtue of its modest scale. A recent meal opened on high note with scallops, bacon & truffled cauliflower purée, & tender rose veal in a foie gras velouté. Mains of super-succulent local pork served with apple purée, pork sausage & a red wine sauce & wild sea bass on a herb risotto with some slow-cooked cherry tomatoes were both expertly judged. A dessert of white chocolate pannacotta completed a clean sweep.
