Square Meal Review of Aubergine at the Compleat Angler ?

This Marlow offshoot of Aubergine shares a great deal in common with the Chelsea original – finely wrought & beautifully presented French food, a wonderful wine list & an enticing cheese trolley, plus smooth, seamless service. The difference is in the gorgeous setting – an elegant little room in a pretty hotel sitting by the banks of the Thames, with the river cascading over Marlow weir past the leaded windows. The cooking is spot on: pert tortellini of lobster crowned with shavings of autumn truffle proved a deeply satisfying way to start the meal. To follow, an assiette of veal saw sweetbreads, roasted rump & pan-fried fillet cooked to perfection & complemented by earthy caramelised onion purée & a casserole of ceps & bacon, while a textbook pear tarte tatin provided a classic finish.

William Drabble gone and Miles Nixon is producing excellent plates of food. We have eaten about four times in the last couple of months and he deserves to be up there with some of the best. Canape, amuse bouche and pre-dessert always included with a la carte menu and even these are superbly executed with great depth of flavour – no shyness with flavours and seasoning to be found here. Not many one stars can claim all this. Each time, he has served to impeccable consistent standard…a bit of an alchemist one could say! Another example of a fine chef being passed over by Michelin, so we must continue to fly the flag for him on Squaremeal. He deserves it every bit as much as his local competitors viz. Tom Kerridge (when he was at 1 star, not sure yet whether he deserves 2) and Adam Simmonds, who at last has got his back.
The only big neg' is the atmosphere. Musically, It's stuck in a time warp (it can't surely be the chef's choice) and decor doesn't quite do it for me either (though judging by other reviews here it evidently appeals).
Some may find the wine a bit pricey, but we haven't been disappointed yet. Staff are welcoming and knowledgeable. An establishment which doesn't quite live up to the talent who resides in the kitchen. We'll definitely be back to test how long standards can be maintained. Hopefully he's up to doing quite a few ‘Miles’ yet.

This is fine dining at it's very best, with a fabulous tasting menu and great service. Romantic and cosy, with views of the weir, the restaurant is relaxing but still has a “buzz”.

It can only be a matter of time before Miles Nixon and his team are granted the Michelin star they so deserve!

My husband and I visited Aubergine at the Compleat Angler having read the excellent reviews posted here and elsewhere and found it as brilliant as we had hoped.

Service was faultless, especially the excellent Maitre D' who made us feel very welcome, showed us to a lovely table and checked on us just the right amount! Other staff were attentive and knowledgeable and made us feel equally welcome.

The food was outstanding; my first grouse of the season arrived as a perfectly roasted breast and croquette made of the leg meat – both totally divine. My husband's fillet of beef was equally superb, an again offered with well judged, well cooked and delicious garnish. Puddings were good but the 9/10 I have given for food is down to an overly caremlised tarte tatin which was thus rather bitter.

For me the lighting in the dining room made for a slightly less the perfect atmosphere but this is an entirely subjective view and would absolutely not prevent a return visit. And whilst dinner here is not cheap, it is great value given the quality of the food & service.

We loved Aubergine and I would suggest it is ideal for a romantic dinner or any kind of special occasion.

Having being to the Chelsea original I had high expectations and was not disappointed in any way.

The restaurant is relatively small but the atmosphere is perfect for a romantic meal or a meal with friends. The only downside is that we were situated next to a false wall which connected with the lounge area. A large group on the other side were noisy and this clearly audible on some occasions.

The service was first class, attentive and always willing to meet your needs. Being interested in cheese, the waiter spent 15 minutes explaining the vast cheese selection and some of its history (as I requested)

The food was sumptuous and what you would expect with everyone on the table discussing just how good it was and how we wished we could order everything !!!

A must visit- it can only be a matter of time until it achieves a Michelin star.
