Liverpool’s link in this trusted chain follows the same formula as its siblings, proving that reliability needn’t lack sparkle. On the ground floor of the lofty purpose-built hotel, the Mal Brasserie’s spacious interior, styled as New York Gothic, gives moody boudoir chic an industrial edge, combining dark plum & black upholstery with exposed ductwork & spotlights. But substance is not sacrificed for style. An unpretentious single-page menu delivers hearty portions, with favourites such as steak frites, burgers & fish & chips alongside more unusual dishes like breast of guinea fowl with confit chorizo, all accompanied by wines from an extensive but interesting list. Cheery staff weave among the mixture of hotel guests and well-dressed, weekend locals, while two distinct private rooms offer group dining (with a flat-screen TV so diners can follow the kitchen action). There’s also a seductively lit bar next door.
