Eager young chef Barney McGrath took over the reigns of this vegetarian eatery in September 2011, changing the name from Café Maitreya to Maitreya Social, & it's the 'social' aspect he's keen on promoting. With all-day opening & the prospect of live music events upstairs, the emphasis is definitely on lounging. On the food front, you might start with the likes of jerk haloumi with caramelised pineapple, while mains of aubergine, cashew & sweetcorn roulade or spinach, feta & pine nut strudel stand out. Vegan & gluten-free dishes are all helpfully marked up on the menu. Decorated appropriately in various shades of green, Maitreya’s look is relatively smart for this rather run-down part of east Bristol.
