Square Meal review of Camellia Restaurant at South Lodge Hotel:
Built as a family home in 1883 by a noted Victorian botanist (which accounts for the hundreds of camellias & rhododendrons in the surrounding 93 acres of parkland), South Lodge is an imposing pile. The aptly named Camellia Restaurant combines breathtaking views over the South Downs with a repertoire of modern British cooking that has a strong commitment to local supplies. Pumpkin veloute with tortellini of pumpkin ahead of breast & leg of pheasant with spiced lentils & red onion marmalade, then apple & blackberry delice with an apple sorbet could make up a good value lunch (£14/£18 for 2/3 courses – available on Sunday and Monday evenings, too), while roast fillet of sea bass with risotto of shellfish, caramelised aubergine & aniseed dressing, or slow-cooked duck breast with a confit of leg, roast apricots & duck essence are main course choices at dinner. In addition, all bottles on the extensive wine list are available by the glass.
